Upper Iowa Speedway Race Review August 30, 2008 By Dwight Jones
When this 2008 racing season started at Decorah’s Upper Iowa Speedway, as usual, Labor Day Weekend was originally scheduled as their Season Championships weekend. However, due to the high number of rain-outs earlier in the year, the season was extended two weeks, with the final point event of the year now scheduled for Saturday, Sept 13th. However, with ultra tight points in nearly every class, there was some important business to take care of this past Saturday night, with point leaders trying to build a margin of any kind and, for those trying to catch them, another chance to close the gap. How did things turn out? Let’s take a look -
Fisk Farm and Home Hornets – Adam Leiran used a fast high line to grab the lead in the early running of the Hornet feature, but Murry Keatley, who has been dominant the past month or so since returning to UIS got past Leiran on the bottom and opened up a nice lead while Scott Kronn and Leiran battled it out for second. With the green flag flying, Kronn and Leiran were door to door with Leiran squeezing past at the checkers for second but the win would go to Keatley as he continued his late season surge.
Sunoco Race Fuels Hobby Stocks – Kyle Frye started pole and led early in the Hobby Stock feature until a an early caution flew for a corner one spin by Denise Krauskopf. Following the re-start, Nick Schwebach would lead for a short time before Adam Cline would make his own charge to the front. Last week’s winner Kyle Anderson would then contend Schwebach for second when a second caution flew, this time for a corner four spin by Chris Busch. Cline led again following the re-start until a third caution flew when Justin Kupka stopped on the track with mechanical problems. After the re-start, Donavon Nunnikhoven came from nowhere past Anderson and Scott Spilde to second and set his sights on the leader. Krauskopf then spun again, bringing out another caution. Some great racing would take place through the end, with Nunnikhoven doing all he could to get past Cline on the top side but it wasn’t to be as the Cline’s #71 took home another trophy on the season.
Sim’s TV Outlaw Hobby Stocks Feature – Cody Cook started outside pole in the Outlaw Hobby Stock feature and moved out to the lead on lap one. Just when Kyle Falck was ready to make his move for the lead, Josh Ludeking appeared to get loose near the leaders, causing a spin further back in the pack as others checked up. Falck, Cook and Austin Curtin would have a nice battle for the lead after the re-start when a second caution flew when Chris Hovden and Casey Panos got together. Falck led following the re-start but point leader Dillon Anderson, as he’s done seemingly every week, brought his #44 through the field yet again and this time used a fast high line to overtake Falck for the lead. Anderson and the rest of the leaders would have to contend with some lap traffic before the event ended, but all came through unscathed including Anderson who took home the win, prize money and set himself up for a chance at his first UIS point championship next Saturday night.
Bill’s Auto Repair B-Mods – a three car mishap slowed the early running of the B-Mod feature when Rob Anderson, Eric Verthein and point leader Matt Jones tangled in corner three. Jones would go to the pits but continue in the event. After the re-start, Jeremy Schaufenbrel and Jimmy Broszeit were battling for the lead when Junior Boyer brought his #42 on the high side all the way to the front. While he built a nice lead, Brian Freilinger and Bryan Webb would move to second and third respectively before another caution flew for a corner one spin by Bruce Hovey. While the leaders all ran high, Jones would make his way through the field by using the bottom, getting past Freilinger for third while Webb held down second with Boyer taking the win.
Decorah Implement Stock Cars – Scott Anderson and Danny Cole, Jr. fought for the lead early on in the Stock Car feature while Don Rude closed in as well. Anderson would eventually take the spot while Kurt Krauskopf fought his way to second and eventually the lead with Cole moving to second. Matt Greiner and Rude were close behind until Mitch Hovden got past them both and brought his #15M to second. Hovden, the Stock Car rookie, was giving Kraukopf all he could handle while Tom Schmitt, who is at the other end of the spectrum, having won basically everything there is to win in a Stock Car, brought his #18 into contention as well. The veteran and the rookie would battle through the final two laps with Hovden squeezing out second but the win went to Krauskopf who continued his strong 2008 season.
