Upper Iowa Speedway Race Review August 23, 2008 By Dwight Jones
When drivers hit the track at Decorah’s Upper Iowa Speedway this past Saturday night, they knew they had two weeks of regular point competition – this week and next, prior to the Season Championships on September 13th. In nearly every class, the points are extremely tight, especially at the top of the standings, and a flat tire, engine problems or slightest mishap can make all the difference. Let’s take a look back at the thrills and spills that made for another fantastic night of racing at Northeast Iowa’s “Action Track” -
Fisk Farm and Home Hornets – Murry Keatley survived a three-wide battle for the lead in the early running of the Hornet feature to grab the top spot. As usual, on came the charge of point leader Steve Dwyer who had his #7 Honda heading towards the front in a big way, while Adam Leiran was on the move as well, taking the third spot. Dwyer made it to Keatley’s bumper and would try all he could throughout the last half of the race but Keatley has been doing this for a long time and proved yet again why he’s got a house full of trophies as he claimed his third feature win of the season, finishing ahead of Dwyer, Leiran and Mike Balik.
Sunoco Race Fuels Hobby Stocks – Kyle Anderson quickly shot his #98 Ford to the front of the pack in the Hobby Stock feature, with Steve Larson and Adam Cline running close behind. A caution flew when Doug Lind spun in corner four. Following the re-start, Cline got past Larson and was putting a lot of heat on Anderson who was running the high side, giving Cline all the room he needed on the bottom to progress on the leader. The two would make it through some lap traffic unscathed, and with the two-to-go flags waving, Anderson appeared to attempt to move towards the bottom the protect the lead, but in actuality it appeared to hurt him as he lost the momentum he had found throughout the entire event by running high. With the white flag flying, showing one lap to go, Anderson again tried to run a lower line, and Cline got a great run on him out of corner four and the two passed the flagman door to door with track officials determining Anderson the winner, finishing just ahead of Cline a third place finisher Brandon Hare.
Sim’s TV Outlaw Hobby Stocks Feature – up until last week, Dillon Anderson had held the point lead throughout the entire 2008 season, but problems and a good run moved Austin Curtin to the top of the point sheet this week, with Anderson in second. Having lost the points championship the night before in Cresco by a heartbreaking two points, Anderson certainly came into Saturday night motivated, and ready to get his mojo back. Well, he would have to wait to do so initially, as Pete Solum led early on, but Anderson made short order of the rest of the field, quickly moving from seventh to first. With the top side turning rubber slick, all of the leaders were hugging the bottom when the first caution flew for a spin by Chris Hovden with five laps to go. Anderson led again following the re-start until a last lap spin by Darren Vick made for a one lap shootout. As expected, things got a bit crazy on that last lap with Kyle Falck finishing second, Keith Schwartzhoff making a hard charge to third, and Curtin dropping to fifth to make things very interesting atop the re-tabulated point sheet.
Bill’s Auto Repair B-Mods – Eric Verthein led early on in the B-Mod feature, with Junior Boyer getting past Rob Anderson for second. Boyer then moved to the lead, while Bryan Webb, who has been ultra tough the past six weeks or so, moved to second. Jeremy Schaufenbuel then spun, bringing out a caution with ten laps remaining. Boyer led again following the re-start, while point leader Matt Jones moved to third. Another caution flew when Shane Panos spun in corner four. Following the re-start, Webb would maneuver past Boyer and never look back as he claimed his fourth feature win of the year in exciting fashion.
Decorah Implement Stock Cars – veteran dirt tracker Kevin Bidne grabbed the lead in the Stock Car feature on lap one, while Danny Cole was hanging tough in second. Just as point leader Dan Jones was making his way to third, a caution flew when Mike Kelly spun in corner four. Following the re-start, Jones had his #25 stuck to the bottom and on the move as he grabbed the lead from Bidne. Kurt Krauskopf then began to pressure Bidne for second, and would get the job done as he cleared the #62 and set his sights on Jones. Krauskopf would make it to Jones’ back bumper, which he used a time or two in corner four to try to rattle Jones’ cage, but Jones is the point leader for a reason, and showed yet again that he’s the man to beat at UIS as he claimed his seventh feature win of the year, finishing just ahead of Krauskopf, Bidne and Tory Reicks.
Top Ten Finishers Per Class – B-Mods – Webb, Boyer, Jones, Verthein, Anderson, Halverson, Kelly, Krambeer, Broszeit, Erickson Hobby Stock – Anderson, Cline, Hare, Larson, Hovden, Nunnikhoven, Sacquinte, Frye, Krauskopf, Hanson Hornets – Keatley, Dwyer, Leiran, Balik, Holten, Pierce, Stahl, Lewis, Brink, Gooder Outlaw Hobby Stocks – Anderson, Falck, Schwartzhoff, Ludeking, Curtin, Solum, Cook, Christopher, Holthaus, Panos Stock Car – Jones, Krauskopf, Bidne, Reicks, Hovden, Donlan, Greiner, Anderson, Cole, Curtin
