Upper Iowa Speedway Race Review August 16, 2008
By Dwight Jones

Following a rain-out for the USMTS (United States Modified Touring Series) show scheduled for Wednesday night at Decorah’s Upper Iowa Speedway, there was a full show and them some this past Saturday night with a regular weekly slate of racing, in addition to the USMTS boys showing their muscle around the Decorah bull ring. A class-by-class review includes -

Fisk Farm and Home Hornets – Adam Leiran started pole in the Hornet feature, and quickly grabbed the lead while Murry Keatley moved his #8 to second. A caution flew when point leader Steve Dwyer spun in front of the grandstand. Following the re-start, it was Leiran again leading the way when Keatley went high to try to take the top spot and would be successful doing so. Keatley built a nice lead as the race wore on and would indeed claim the win, finishing ahead of Dwyer and Leiran.

Sunoco Race Fuels Hobby Stocks – point leader Dan Sacquinte took advantage of a rare front row starting spot to shoot to an early lead in the Hobby Stock feature. Last week’s winner Adam Cline was battling close in second until mechanical problems ended his chances. Scott Spilde was using the bottom and worked his way past Sacquinte to the lead. Dan Hovden then started working on Sacquinte for second, digging low, as did Brandon Hare who worked to third but the lead was all Spilde’s who claimed his first UIS feature win of the year ahead of Hovden.

Sim’s TV Outlaw Hobby Stocks Feature – Austin Curtin started outside pole in the Outlaw Hobby feature and used it to take an early lead in the Outlaw Hobby feature. Kyle Falck worked his way to second and Keith Schwartzhoff to third when the caution flew for point leader Dillon Anderson’s flat tire. Curtin led following the re-start, but the man on the move was Cody Cook who had his #29 wound up all the way to second before a second caution flew with two laps remaining when a barrier tire was kicked up onto the track. An additional caution would fly in the final two laps, but Curtin was strong throughout as he claimed trophy on the night and made things very interesting atop the point sheet with Anderson finishing tenth.

Bill’s Auto Repair B-Mods – Koal Deering and Matt Jones fought for the early lead in the B-Mod feature, with Deering eventually taking the lead. Bryan Webb, who has been running tough as nails lately, continued with another strong showing this week, getting past Jones for second. Webb then used a fast bottom line to take the lead from Deering, and as just past the halfway point had built himself a nice lead. Lap traffic starting with five laps remaining would make things interesting, but Webb was rock solid as he claimed the win ahead of Deering and Jones.

Decorah Implement Stock Cars – Kevin Donlan led early in the Stock Car feature, but point leader Dan Jones had other plans as he used a fast bottom line to take the lead. Mitch Hovden then moved to second before a caution flew for an incident involving a barrier tire. Soon after the re-start, another caution flew, this time for a two car incident. Following yet another caution, this time for a three car incident, Jones was leading but Hovden was right there and would get past Jones on the bottom, but Jones returned the favor, moving to the bottom of Hovden to re-take the spot. At the same time, a great battle for third was taking place between Matt Greiner and Tory Reicks which Reicks would eventually win. Up front, it was Jones who held off Hovden’s attempts at his first win to take home yet another trophy, forcing the Stock Car rookie to wait at least one more week for that inevitable first win that has eluded him thus far in 2008.

USMTS – Tim Donlinger was the lap one leader of the 4th Annual Summer Challenge, but the always tough Kelly Shyrock was showing the way by lap two of the forty lap feature event. Shyrock would continue up front until lap twelve when Zach Vanderbeek got past Shyrock. Lap traffic then became an issue, with Shyrock using it to his advantage to regain the top spot from Vanderbeek on lap twenty one. However, Vanderbeek, who is the USMTS points leader, wasn’t giving up and within the next five laps would move to the front yet again and this time would make it stick as he held off Shyrock and Jon Tesch to claim $2,000 in winnings and a hefty trophy to take back home to New Sharon, IA.
