Upper Iowa Speedway Race Review August 9, 2008
By Dwight Jones

This fan has attended races weekly throughout the tri-states for somewhere in the neighborhood of twenty years straight. I will not say that this week’s racing at Decorah’s Upper Iowa Speedway was the best I have ever seen, but I will say that each and every race, especially the Stock Car feature, was as good as anything I have ever seen. If you were there, you already know the details. If you weren’t, I’ll do my best to tell the stories, but quite frankly, my friend, you really should have been there. Here it goes -

Fisk Farm and Home Hornets – Johny Severtson started pole in the Hornet feature and shot to an early lead while Murry Keatley moved his #8 quickly to second. Ryan Happel, subbing for point leader Steve Dwyer, was on the move at the very bottom of the track and soon found himself in third. Justin Lewis spun in corner three, bringing out the caution. Happel got past Keatley for second and then moved to the high side to take the lead. With Keatley running a strong second, Adam Leiran moved to third. The three would stay ultra tight throughout, with Leiran getting past Keatley with two laps remaining. Severtson would get past Keatley for third on the final lap with Happel holding off Leiran to take home the exciting win, undoubtedly to Dwyer’s delight.

Sunoco Race Fuels Hobby Stocks – Denise Krauskopf looked strong at the start of the Hobby Stock feature, holding down the lead in the early running. Adam Cline, who has been very strong this 2008 season though without a feature win, quickly maneuvered to second. Point leader Danny Sacquinte was on the move as well, rocketing his #6 to fourth. Just as Cline was putting the move on Krauskopf for the lead, the caution flew for a spin by Justin Hanson. Cline was awarded the lead at the re-start, with Sacquinte shooting to second after the re-start. Brandon Hare was on the prowl yet again, bypassing a number of cars to get to third. Hare caught Sacquinte with two laps to go, just before another caution flew for an incident involving Hanson and Nick Schwebach. In the two lap dash to the finish, Dan Hovden got past Hare for third but Sacquinte could do nothing with Cline as he did, indeed, end the previously mentioned winless streak in exciting fashion.

Sim’s TV Outlaw Hobby Stocks Feature – like Cline, Steve Christopher has been very competitive this season, but going into Saturday night, had yet to take home a trophy. Well, he looked to change that this time around as he jumped out front on lap one of the Outlaw Hobby feature. However, an early caution for a spin by Teddy Hughes, Jr. would bunch the field behind Christopher. Following the re-start, Keith Schwarthoff was putting a ton of heat on the leader, while Austin Curtin moved to third. With the rest of the leaders running high, point leader Dillon Anderson decided to play by a different tune, taking his #44 to the bottom and began to close on the front runners. He got by Curtin just before a second caution flew, this time for mechanical problems of Casey Panos that left a lot of liquid on the track. Following the re-start with four laps to go, it was once again Christopher showing the way with Anderson hunting him down via the low side. With the white flag waving, Christopher entered corner three with the lead but his car floated just slightly in corner four, enough for Anderson to steal the win, his sixth of the season.

Bill’s Auto Repair B-Mods – Andy Kelly was showing the way in the early running of the B-Mod feature while Brian Freilinger got past Virgil Johnson for second. Freilinger used the bottom to bypass Kelly for the lead just before Junior Boyer used a line even lower to get to second. Boyer jumped to the high side just long enough to take the lead from Freilinger, then began pulling away by using the high side in corners one and two and the bottom side in three and four. Last week’s winner Bryan Webb moved his #10 to third behind Freilinger, and with three laps remaining, the leaders would catch lap traffic which would make things very interesting but in the end, it was Boyer’s night as he claimed took home the trophy and gave his many fans something to cheer about.

Decorah Implement Stock Cars – fifteen Stock Cars took to the track for their feature event with Don Rude getting past the hard charging Ford of Scott Anderson for the early lead. A tangle in corner four involving Kevin Bidne, Jason Borsheim and Mike Kelly brought out an early caution on lap four. Following the re-start, there were two side-by-side battles taking place at the front, as Rude and Anderson battled door-to-door for the lead while point leader Dan Jones and Matt Greiner did the same just behind them for third. Anderson would finally get past Rude, with Greiner getting past Jones on the bottom for what would soon be second place. Kurt Krauskopf is seemingly always moving forward, and used that familiar progression to get past Rude for third. What transpired next quite literally had to be seen to be believed, but Greiner, Jones, Krauskopf, Anderson and Rude put on a five car battle for the lead throughout the final ten laps that most racing eyes, no matter how old, have likely never seen. Lap after lap they fought, all changing positions countless times with Greiner eventually leading with two to go but then came Rude on the top side, while Jones fought back on the bottom and all five previously mentioned came out of corner four with the checkers waving, each undoubtedly thinking the trophy would be his. At the line it was Greiner squeezing past Jones for the absolutely amazing win, his second of the season. And race fans weren’t the only ones left breathless as Greiner had to pass on his post-race interview – out of breath and speechless.
