Upper Iowa Speedway Race Review August 2, 2008 By Dwight Jones
When the calendar turns to August, drivers know that the racing season is winding down. If the action at Decorah’s Upper Iowa Speedway this past Saturday night was any indication, every driver that hit the track had apparently just checked their calendar, providing yet another week of fantastic racing action, which included a nasty crash that brought out the Jaws of Life. And as though points and pride weren’t enough incentive, weekly sponsor Decorah Implement sweetened the pot even more, throwing in an additional $50 to each feature winner. Let’s take a class-by-class review of all the thrills and spills -
Fisk Farm and Home Hornets – as has become common place this season, a great battle was again being fought at the front of the Hornet feature between Adam Leiran and point-leader Steve Dwyer. The two would battle back and forth throughout until, with three laps remaining, Ryan Henderson made hard contact with the retaining wall exiting corner four. In the three lap dash for cash, it was Dwyer holding off Leiran and Murry Keatley for the win. Sunoco Race Fuels Hobby Stocks – Danny Sacquinte was rocketing through the field in the early running of the Hobby Stock feature when the first caution flag flew for a corner four spin by Denise Krauskopf. Just like last week, some phenomenal three-wide racing was entertaining the fans in the stands following the re-start before Bruce Gerleman and Steve Larson got together, bringing out a second caution with ten laps to go. Yet another caution then flew, this time for a nasty crash involving four cars, including Nick Schwebach who had to be extracted from his car with assistance from the Jaws of Life as a precaution due to complaints of back pain. He was taken to the hospital to be checked over, but is not believed to have been seriously injured. A final caution then flew when Kyle Anderson and Justin Kupka got together. Following the final re-start, Sacquinte would hold off Adam Cline and Brandon Hare to take home another trophy for the mantle.
Sim’s TV Outlaw Hobby Stocks Feature – in the early running of the Outlaw Hobby feature, Kyle Falck got sideways and blew a tire. After stopping on the track, officials determined that he had intentionally stopped the race and black flagged him, ending his night early. Following the re-start, point-leader Dillon Anderson had a similar situation with a flat, also stopping the race and also being black flagged for the same infraction. Meanwhile, a great race for the lead was setting up between Austin Curtin, who has been on a roll recently, and Cody Cook, who was quite frankly due for a win. Keith Schwartzhoff had mechanical problems and brought out the final caution with four laps to go, and following the re-start, Cook would indeed get the much deserved win, with Steve Christopher getting by Curtin for second.
Bill’s Auto Repair B-Mods – seventeen B-Mods started their feature event, with things getting off to a slow start when Shane Panos hit the tire barrier and spun, bringing out an early caution. Bryan Webb who, following his first feature win a couple weeks back, seems to be getting this B-Mod class figured out, then moved to the lead. Point leader Matt Jones, who is always seemingly moving forward, was on the prowl yet again, moving his #23 to second. With the laps winding down, Webb would encounter some lap traffic but would cruise though it unscathed as he claimed his second feature win of the year, ahead of Jones and third place running Junior Boyer.
Decorah Implement Stock Cars – Kurt Krauskopf and Danny Cole, Jr. battled for the lead in the early running of the Stock Car feature until Kevin Donlon made contact with the backstretch wall, ending up off the corner three banking and bringing out the first caution. Following the re-start, point leaders Dan Jones and Mitch Hovden were coming on strong as well until, with seven laps remaining, Mike Kelly spun in corner four, bringing out the second yellow. With six laps remaining, Mike Krambeer got into Kelly, bringing out yet another caution. In the midst of all the cautions, Don Rude had moved his #44 to second, while Jones was battling Hovden for third. Donlon spun in corner two with three laps to go. In the three lap shoot-out, it was Krauskopf holding off Rude for the exciting win with Jones claiming third.
