Upper Iowa Speedway Race Review July 26, 2008
By Dwight Jones

The Decorah area was abuzz with Nordic Fest activities this past weekend, but the folks that took a break to take in the Saturday night races at the Upper Iowa Speedway enjoyed yet another night of hard, close racing under picture perfect skies. How did your favorite finish? Let’s take a look -

Fisk Farm and Home Hornets – Murry Keatley spent several seasons near or at the front of Hornet features across the tri-state area, and was there yet again as he quickly shot from third to first in this week’s UIS feature event. Point leader Steve Dwyer was on the prowl, as usual, rocketing his #7 Honda to second. By the halfway point, Adam Leiran had moved to third but the win would go to Keatley, his first of the season, with Dwyer hanging tough throughout.

Sunoco Race Fuels Hobby Stocks – Scott Spilde started outside pole in the Hobby feature and jumped out front on lap one. Danny Sacquinte had his #6, painted in the vintage Tom Hovey paint scheme, on the move as well, grabbing second place on lap three. A first caution flew for an incident involving Andy Stinson. Spilde led following the re-start, with Sacquinte still second and Adam Cline in third. By the halfway point, there was some fantastic two and three wide racing for the lead between the three previously mentioned with Spilde hanging tough to the lead. Kyle Frye spun with three to go, bringing out a second caution and setting up for an awesome finish. The leaders would not disappoint as they took the two-to-go flags three wide and, when Brandon Hare jumped into the mix, passed the flag man waving the last lap whites four wide. Spilde would hold the wolves off one last time, with Sacquinte taking second and Hare third in a simply awesome finish.

Sim’s TV Outlaw Hobby Stocks Feature #1 – to complete the Outlaw Hobby feature event that got rained out during last week’s show, it was Cody Cook starting outside pole and grabbing the first lap lead. Cook would continue out front while Austin Curtin fought through traffic and, by the halfway point, had moved into second. With two to go, Cook and Curtin were door-to-door with Curtin low and Cook high. They would continue side-by-side through the final lap with Curtin squeezing out the win at the line, his first of the season.

Sim’s TV Outlaw Hobby Stock Feature #2 – as in the first Outlaw Hobby feature of the night, Cook jumped to an early lead in the second feature, as well. Point leader Dillon Anderson quickly shot through the field and got door-to-door with Cook and eventually was able to take the lead. A caution then flew when Pete Solum spun in corner four. Anderson led the re-start with four laps remaining and would take home the trophy while Cook held off a hard charging Keith Schwartzhoff for second.

Bill’s Auto Repair B-Mods – Virgil Johnson was back to the front of the B-Mod feature, grabbing a lap one lead from Jeff Krambeer. Eric Verthein, who has been tough as nails all season long, moved past Johnson to the front on lap two, and would stay there until Greg Mitchel had mechanical problems and brought out the first caution of the event. After the re-start, Jim Erickson spun, bringing out a second caution. By the halfway point, point leader Matt Jones and last week’s winner Bryan Webb had caught Verthein, with all going three-wide at the halfway point for the lead. Jones used momentum from the high side to grab the point and would distance himself from Verthein in the closing laps to take the win and further extend his point lead.

Decorah Implement Stock Cars – Tory Reicks knows his way around UIS in a Stock Car, and proved so yet again as he quickly grabbed the lead in this week’s feature event. Reicks would continue to show the way until lap seven when Brian Mahlstedt tagged the tire barrier in corner two, bringing out the first caution. Reicks would lead following the re-start, with Don Rude in second. Dan Jones, back after missing last week, was on the prowl in his #25, moving to second by the halfway point. Jones got alongside Reicks, with Jones using the bottom to move out front, but just briefly. With six laps to go, a spin in corner two brought out a final caution. Reicks found the high side faster on the re-start, as did Matt Greiner who moved past Jones, who was stuck on the bottom, to take second with Reicks claiming the win, his first of the season at UIS.
