Upper Iowa Speedway July 19, 2008 By Dwight Jones
A quick check of the radar last Saturday evening showed the obvious threat of rain working its way towards Decorah’s Upper Iowa Speedway. Though track officials did all they could to move the show along as quickly as possible, they came up one feature short as the rains started at the end of the Hobby Stock feature and the Outlaw Hobby Stockers, who were waiting on deck, were sent back to their trailers for the night. There will be double-features in that division next week to close out their night from this time around, but as far as everybody else, it was another great night of racing in the four classes that did run. Let’s take a look -
Fisk Farm and Home Hornets – Adam Leiran showed the way in the early running of the Hornet feature, with Murry Keatley running a strong second. Point leader Steve Dwyer quickly maneuvered his #7 Honda to third, and then moved to the bottom to get past Keatley for second with four laps remaining. With only two laps to go, Leiran seemed to have the race won until mechanical problems ended his chances, with Dwyer grabbing the lead on the last lap to claim his fifth win of the year. Sunoco Race Fuels Hobby Stocks – Jesse Holzer spent a lot of last season at the front of many Hobby Stock features, and was up front yet again as he quickly moved from third to first in the Hobby feature. Brandon Hare had his #56H on the move, as usual, and shot to second while Adam Cline advanced to third just before a caution flew for debris. Cline got past Hare for second on the re-start, and then moved to the bottom to get past Holzer for the lead. Holzer was fighting back and while going into corner three made contact with Cline, sending both leaders spinning and bringing out another caution. Hare grabbed the lead following the re-start while Danny Sacquinte made it to second and put a lot of heat on Hare but it wasn’t to be as Hare took home the trophy on the night.
Bill’s Auto Repair B-Mods – Eric Verthein has ran well the entire 2008 season in the B-Mod division, and looked strong yet again as he led early in this week’s feature event. Bryan Webb had his #10 working well too, taking second while Shane Panos and Matt Jones battled for third. A caution flew when Jim Erickson spun in corner three. Verthein led again following the re-start, while Jones moved to third and then got door-to-door with Webb for second. Erickson was involved in another incident, this time in corner two, that brought out a second caution with ten laps remaining. Webb moved to the bottom and got past Verthein for the lead after the re-start while Jones moved to second. Virgil Johnson had some apparent mechanical problems in corner four and brought out the third caution of the event. After the final re-start with seven laps remaining, Webb and Jones would have a great battle, with Webb running high and Jones low. Jones got alongside the leader several times but could never secure the lead as Webb held on for his first ever UIS B-Mod feature win.
Decorah Implement Stock Cars – Danny Cole, Jr. led early in the Stock car feature but was soon bypassed by a hard charging Matt Greiner for the lead. Kurt Krauskopf had his #60 wound up as he rocketed to second and stuck it low to take the lead from Greiner, but couldn’t make it work. Birthday boy Mitch Hovden was running a strong third and waiting for Krauskopf to make a rare mistake, which he did when getting too high coming out of corner three, allowing Hovden by on the bottom side. Hovden has ran extremely well this, his rookie year in Stock Car and would undoubtedly have enjoyed the birthday present of his first UIS Stock Car feature win but it wasn’t to be as Greiner, unlike Krauskopf, wouldn’t wiggle as he claimed his second feature win of the year.
