Upper Iowa Speedway July 10, 2008 by Dwight Jones
Decorah’s Upper Iowa Speedway held a rare Thursday show this past Saturday night as part of the entertainment line-up for the 2008 Winneshiek County Fair, and it was entertaining, indeed! A packed grandstands enjoyed another night of fantastic racing that certainly left those that only attend once a year with their fair buttons wondering why they don’t attend more often. A review of the action includes –
Fisk Farm and Home Hornets – Adam Leiran shot to an early lead in the Hornet feature, but point leader Steve Dwyer quickly made his way to second and set his sights on the leader. Dwyer would be able to get by Leiran and grow a nice lead while another battle was brewing between Adam Ewing and Nate Cahoon. With the checkers flying, Ewing would wrap up the third spot with Leiran securing second but the win would yet again go to Dwyer.
Sunoco Race Fuels Hobby Stocks – Brandon Hare led the way in the early running of the Hobby Stock feature while Scott Spilde and Kyle Anderson were tussling it out for second. A caution flew on lap four for debris on the track. Hare led the way following the re-start with Spilde running second when a second caution flew for a car with mechanical problems. Hare was running the high outside line following the re-start, and would run it throughout the remainder of the event. Adam Cline and Dan Sacquinte would make their way past Spilde for second and third, but the win would go to Hare.
Sim’s TV Outlaw Hobby Stocks – Steve Bartlett started pole and led the first lap of the Outlaw Hobby Stock feature until Austin Curtin got by on the low side to overtake the top spot. Point leader Dillon Anderson was on the move as well, quickly working his way to second and putting the heat on Curtin. An early caution flew for debris, with Anderson chasing Curtin yet again following the re-start. Things then got real dicey when a three-wide battle for the lead took place between Bartlett, Curtin and Anderson, soon followed by another caution when a car spun on the track. The leaders would continue to fight it out until, with two laps remaining, Casey Panos spun to set up a two lap shoot out. This one was setting itself for a wild finish, which is exactly what you got. The last two laps included a couple of additional cautions, with Anderson being penalized for rough driving, Curtin dropping all the way to fifth and the win going to Chris Hovden in a crazy, crazy ending.
Bill’s Auto Repair B-Mods – Brian Schrage rocketed to the lead in the B-Mod feature before a corner one incident brought out a caution. Schrage led again following the re-start with Scott Bauer and Greg Mitchel in chase. Point leader Matt Jones was working his way through the field, as usual, and after Mitchel grabbed the lead, Jones grabbed second. The two would eventually get side-by-side with Jones finally taking the lead. Jimmy Broszeit and Brian Freilinger moved past Mitchel for second and third as they all worked their way through lap traffic, but the lead would stay with Jones who added yet another trophy to the mantle.
Decorah Implement Stock Cars - Kevin Donlan started up front and stayed there in the first laps of the Stock Car feature until Don Rude and Matt Greiner made it a three-way battle for the lead. Following an early caution, Donlan led yet again but would have to contend with last week’s runner up Jake Ludeking, who would move to the bottom and get past the leader. Rude then moved to second and was putting heat on Ludeking with Donlan and Mitch Hovden hanging close. Hovden then thought he’d take a shot at the lead. Hovden gave it a great run, and on the last lap got alongside Ludeking but would lose by less than half a car’s length as Ludeking picked up his first UIS Stock Car feature of the season.
