Upper Iowa Speedway July 5, 2008 by Dwight Jones
Following last week’s rain-out, both drivers and race fans were ready to get back to action this past Saturday night at Decorah’s Upper Iowa Speedway. There were lots of fireworks, both on and off of the track, with a little fun thrown in at intermission as the kid’s enjoyed rides around the track with their favorite drivers. However, the racing was far from fun and games as nearly every feature came down to the last lap to determine the winner. If you attended the races, you’ve got a lot of stories to tell. If not, let’s take a class-by-class review –
Fisk Farm and Home Hornets – going into this week’s action, there had only been two winners in the Hornet division – Steve Dwyer and Adam Leiran. However, there was a new sheriff in town at the beginning of the Hornet feature when Justin Lewis shot to an early lead while Dwyer and Leiran battled it out for second. As they continued to fight it out, Lewis built a nice lead and though Dwyer dug low in the final laps to try to get past Brent Holten who had moved to second, he would have to settle for third, amazingly his worst finish of the season as Lewis claimed his first trophy of the year in dominating style. Sunoco Race Fuels Hobby Stocks – following an early caution for a corner two spin by Brittney Anderson, Nick Schwebach shot to the lead. He would continue to show the way with Dan Hovden and Adam Cline fighting it out for second. Another caution then flew for debris just before the halfway point. Following the re-start, Cline moved to the front, but the man most on the move was point leader Danny Sacquinte, who moved to third and then quickly to second. Schwebach hit the front stretch wall, bringing out a re-start with five laps to go. Following another two cautions for debris, Sacquinte was raring to go and had his #6 wound up on the outside and shot by the leader with three to go and cruised to the win, his second of the year, finishing ahead of Brandon Hare and Cline.
Sim’s TV Outlaw Hobby Stocks – Keith Schwartzhoff has been very busy recently building a brand new race car, and all the hard work was paying off big time in the early running of the Outlaw Hobby feature as he shot past Matt Buddenberg in his new ride to take the lead. However, he would soon have to contend with Kyle Falck and point leader Dillon Anderson, who were on the move themselves. Schwartzhoff’s car seemed to like the high side, while Falck and Anderson were trying to gain ground on the low side. Falck made the bottom work as he got past the leader with Anderson following him through to second. With the two-to-go flags waving, Anderson got under Falck for the lead. However, a last lap caution would make things very interesting. However, Anderson had a solid re-start and held on for his fourth feature win of the year, just ahead of Schwarthoff and Steve Christopher as Falck faded in the final two laps to finish fifth.
Bill’s Auto Repair B-Mods – Bryan Webb had his #10 B-Mod out front in the early laps of their feature event. A caution then flew on lap two when Virgil Johnson spun in corner two. After the re-start, Webb would continue to lead while point leader Matt Jones was making his usual charge through the field, taking the second spot and then moving under Webb to grab the lead. Webb and Eric Verthein then had a great battle for second, with Verthein finally getting the spot near the halfway point. Jones is rarely caught once he has the lead, but Verthein seemed determined to change that bit of history as he was visibly gaining on Jones on the low side. Jones appeared to get a glimpse of Verthein’s low side progression out of corner four and squeezed down just in front of Verthein before hitting corner one. From that point on, it was clear sailing for Jones who used the faster bottom line to claim his second feature win of the year.
Decorah Implement Stock Cars – Jake Ludeking started outside pole in the Stock Car feature and led the first couple of laps until Don Rude shot by on the high side in his white #44. A three-wide battle for third was taking place at the same time with Mitch Hovden, Kurt Krauskopf and Mike Kelly fighting it out. Rude then dropped off the track with apparent mechanical problems, handing the lead back over to Ludeking. Krauskopf then moved to second while point leader Dan Jones was rocketing through the field to third. With Krauskopf running the high side, Jones dropped to the bottom and got alongside Krauskopf. The two would race door-to-door for a number of laps, all the while closing on the leader. Jones then jumped to the high side to get past Krauskopf, and then back to the bottom as Ludeking was running the preferred high line. Those two would then race door-to-door with Ludeking leading and Jones close behind and with the white flag flying to show it was the last lap of the race, the two went down the backstretch nose to nose and Jones drove his #25 deep into corner three and hammered the gas one last time, just edging Ludeking at the line to claim his fifth feature win of the year in thrilling fashion.
