Upper Iowa Speedway Mid-Season Championships June 21, 2008
by Dwight Jones

It seems nearly impossible to believe, but this past Saturday night Decorah's Upper Iowa Speedway hosted it’s Mid-Season Championship event. Due to the high number of rain-outs and the fact that summer flies by anyway, it seems like the season just started but, according to the calendar, it is already half way over. But nonetheless, as it has been all season long, the racing was fantastic, and race fans undoubtedly went away knowing they had gotten more than their money's worth. How did your favorite do? Let's take a look -

Fisk Farm and Home Hornets – going into this week, 2008 in the Hornet division has been the Steve Dwyer, with the driver from LaCrosse, WI having taken home every feature trophy thus far. Could he win the Mid-Season event for the perfect sweep? Well, if he was to do so, he would have to get passed Adam Leiran, who has been his toughest competition all season long, and proved it once again as he jumped to an early lead. Justin Lewis was running a strong second, and was able to hold off Dwyer for awhile but the point leader got by and set his sights on the leader and the two leaders would run nose to tail throughout but Leiran would end Dwyer’s perfect season in classic fashion by claiming his first feature win of the year.

Sunoco Race Fuels Hobby Stocks – though it has taken a bit longer to shake out, like Dwyer in the Hornet division, the Hobby Stock class has had a car and driver that has separated himself from the pack as the guy to beat. This driver is Brandon Hare, who has been tough as nails the past several weeks. Due to his standings on the point sheet, Dwyer would start back in the pack and, as has become customary, he once again worked his way to the front. However, he would have to contend with Kyle Anderson, who always run strong but has not had a feature win in several years. And when the checkered flags flew, it was Anderson holding the lead as he claimed his first feature win of the year, finishing ahead of Hare and Dan Hovden.

Sim’s TV Outlaw Hobby Stocks – if the Outlaw Hobby Stock class had to name a “ringer” for the first half of 2008, it would likely be Dillon Anderson, who has won, or been in contention to win, every race thus far. Could he cap off a great first half of 2008 with yet another trophy? Well, maybe so, but Cody Cook had other plans as he led early on. However, Anderson sliced and diced his way through the field and grabbed the lead before the halfway point. Two cautions would occur at the result of mishaps involving Pete Solum, but the lead was all Anderson’s who did, indeed, put a solid stamp on the first half of the 2008 season by claiming his fourth win of the year, finishing ahead of Josh Ludeking and Steve Bartlett who had his best finish of the season.

Bill’s Auto Repair B-Mods – unlike the other classes, the B-Mod division at UIS has been a crap shoot in ’08, with a number of drivers attempting to lay claim to “top dog”. Jimmy Broszeit had not yet seen victory lane, but in taking a lead early on made you wonder if this wouldn’t be his week. Junior Boyer and Matt Jones, both of whom are always hard to beat, were closing in on the leader with Boyer making the most forward progress, getting to within a car length at the end of the event but Broszeit was just too tough as he grabbed his first trophy of the year.

Decorah Implement Stock Cars – Mike Krambeer led the early running of the Stock Car feature, but would soon be passed by Kevin Donlan for the top spot. With Donlan leading, Mitch Hovden and point leader Dan Jones would do their best to dial him in. Jones has had a phenomonal first half of the year, and used passes on both the high side and the bottom go make his way to the front and would never look back as he claimed his fourth win of the year. Donlan held off Kurt Krauskopf for second.
