Upper Iowa Speedway 6-14-08 By Dwight Jones
Following yet another rain-out last week, the fifth of the year, if you had seen the track earlier this week, the chances of getting any racing done this time around either seemed a thousand miles beyond bleak. With the Upper Iowa River flooded and the pit area and track covered in several feet of water, countless individuals worked their tails off to remove the millions of gallons of water, and amazingly, the races went on as planned. All of the hard worked provided some fantastic racing, going into next week’s Mid-Season Championships. A class-by-class review includes -
Fisk Farm and Home Hornets – Justin Lewis started pole and shot to an early lead in the Hornet feature, but as has become customary thus far this year, point leader Steve Dwyer quickly maneuvered his #7 Honda through the field and used low-side pass to grab the lead. Last year’s point champ Adam Leiran has ran a strong second to Dwyer the past several races and did so yet again, holding off Chris Gooder for third but the win was all Dwyer’s who made it four-for-four in feature wins thus far in 2008.
Sunoco Race Fuels Hobby Stocks – Justin Kupka used his front row starting spot to lead early in the Hobby Stock feature, with Kyle Anderson and Steve Larson battling for second. A caution flew when Jeremy Oakes and Nick Schwebach tangled in corner three. Following the re-start, Kupka and Anderson were battling for the lead. Last week’s winner Brandon Hare then moved in to the picture, eventually taking the lead. Adam Cline got past Anderson for second, and the three would stay close through the closing laps, battling lap traffic in the process. However, Hare had what it took as he continued his strong start to 2008 by taking home another addition to his rapidly expanding trophy case.
Sim’s TV Outlaw Hobby Stocks – Brad Darling has been running up front a lot lately, and did so again as he moved to an early lead in the Outlaw Hobby Stock feature. He would get early heat from Keith Schwartzhoff and Pete Solum, but continued to lead. As the race rolled on, point leader Dillon Anderson sliced and diced his way through the field and was moving fast towards the front. The race was red flagged when a fire broke out on Cody Cook’s #29. Darling led following the re-start, but with two laps to go Anderson made his move, grabbing the lead in the final laps and claiming his second feature win of the season.
Bill’s Auto Repair B-Mods – Fort the third week in a row, Brian Freilinger was showing the way in the early running of the B-Mod feature event. With Bryan Webb and Junior Boyer battling for second, point-leader Matt Jones was also on the move, taking his #23 all the way to second. Freilinger had grown a nice lead, but Jones started methodically gaining, lap after lap. He caught Freilinger about the time the leader was heading into some lap traffic, and on the final lap with Freilinger running high Jones stuck his B-Mod to the bottom one last time and made it stick, claiming his second feature win of the year in thrilling fashion. Decorah Implement Stock Cars – Jake Ludeking held pole position at the start of the Stock Car feature and would hold the lead through the first few laps. Don Rude, Mitch Hovden and Danny Cole, Jr. all battled for second, with Rude taking the spot, and soon after, the lead. Point leader and last week’s winner Dan Jones had his #25 wound up yet again, moving to second and getting alongside Rude for the lead. Meanwhile, Hovden and Ludeking battled side-by-side for second. A caution then flew for debris on the track, with Jones showing the way following the re-start. Hovden moved to second and Kevin Donlan to third, but the win would go to Jones who claimed his third feature win of the 2008 season.
