Upper Iowa Speedway 5-24-08 By Dwight Jones
Race fans who were enjoying a peaceful Memorial Day weekend took a break from the rest and relaxation to make the short trip to Decorah’s Upper Iowa Speedway this past Saturday night to take in some of the greatest racing this track, or any track, has seen in years. The track was great, but it was the drivers themselves that made this particular night so magical. A class-by-class review of this night to remember is as follows -
Fisk Farm and Home Hornets – for the second week in a row, Adam Leiran shot to an early lead in the Hornet feature only to be hunted down and passed by Steve Dwyer, who tried both low and high lines before finally making the pass. Chris Gooder moved his #16 into third place while Leiran battled back, getting door to door with the leader. By the halfway point, Dwyer had secured the lead and extended it some. He would experience a small amount of lap traffic in the closing laps but it wouldn’t matter as he made it look easy, taking home his second trophy in as many weeks, finishing ahead of Leiran, Gooder and Dustin Pierce.
Sunoco Race Fuels Hobby Stocks – after experiencing mechanical problems last week, Brandon Hare used his front row starting position to show the way early on in the Hobby Stock feature event. Jesse Holzer was putting all sorts of heat on the leader, while Andy Stinson overtook third from Denise Krauskopf. However, Stinson’s progress would soon end with the help of Steve Larson who had his #22 wound up as he grabbed the third spot. Holzer was closing on Hare for the lead and jumped to the high side, but couldn’t make it happen. With three to go, he stuck his #85 low as the leaders battled lap traffic, and then jumped back up top but just couldn’t get it done as Hare claimed his first UIS Hobby feature win of 2008.
Sim’s TV Outlaw Hobby Stocks – Brad Darling started pole position in the Outlaw Hobby feature and showed a lot of muscle up front early on. Josh Ludeking moved to second just before Austin Curtin brought out a caution for a spin in corner three on lap two. Darling led again after the re-start with Ludeking still trying to make a move. Last week’s winner Dillon Anderson moved his #44 to fourth while Kyle Falck overtook Ludeking for second. Just as a four-way battle for the lead was setting up, a second caution flew, this time for a spin by Lance Phillips. Darling led again after the re-start while Anderson moved into second, and then to first when he and the leader made contact at the flag stand that threw Darling off just long enough for Anderson to complete the pass. Falck got past Darling for second just before another caution flew when Curtin and Chris Hovden spun in corner two with three laps to go. Falck was closing on Anderson on the re-start when another caution flew, this time for a spin by Pete Solum. A green-white-checkers re-start followed, and Falck jumped to the high side on the final lap and made it work as he beat Anderson to the flag for the thrilling win, his first of the year.
Bill’s Auto Repair B-Mods – Junior Boyer and Brian Freilinger, who bounced back from a nasty crash last week, battled for the lead early on in the B-Mod feature. They would battle side-by-side for a countless number of laps, with both taking and then losing the lead. By the halfway point, last week’s winner Matt Jones had moved into third, but was never able to put any heat on the leaders. Boyer would eventually take the lead for good and build a decent lead by the time the checkers flew to claim his first feature win of the year. Decorah Implement Stock Cars – This race fan has been attending the races in Decorah weekly for the last 15-20 years, and have seen literally hundreds of races. I’m not saying this was the best race I ever saw, but it was, in my opinion, as good as they get. Don Rude was the early leader while an absolutely amazing three-wide battle for second was taking place behind him. Last week’s winner Dan Jones was on the outside of the three-wide, but stayed in the gas to take the spot. A three-wide battle for the lead soon followed, between Rude, Jones and Matt Greiner. Greiner would eventually take the spot, while Jones held on to second. Greiner was running a high line, and Jones started systematically making gains running a lower line, lap after lap. Meanwhile, Rude, Kurt Krauskopf and Mitch Hovden battled for third. With five to go, Jones had gotten alongside Greiner, as the two ran door-to-door only inches apart but not making contact. With two-to-go, it was still a dead heat, and Jones appeared to have the lead coming out of four on the final lap but Greiner’s higher line gave him more momentum to the flag as he claimed the amazing win by barely a bumper’s length. Hovden finished third.
