   2008 WEEKLY RESULTS
   SAT, MAY 17TH RACE RESULTS
Upper Iowa Speedway 5-17-08
By Dwight Jones

Following four rain-outs, the Upper Iowa Speedway 2008 season finally got up and running this past Saturday night, much to the relief of both drivers and action starved race fans. Though there was rain in the area, Decorah finally got a break as the storms held off, allowing the way for some fantastic racing to take place. Lots of shiny new cars took to the track, but how did your favorite do? Let’s take a look –

Fisk Farm and Home Hornets – Last year’s point champ Adam Leiran started outside pole in the Hornet feature and led early on but the always tough Steve Dwyer had his #7 wound up on the high side and flew past Leiran on lap three to overtake the top spot. It became a two car race through out, with Leiran fighting his way back to battle door-to-door with Dwyer as the laps wound down, but in the end it was Dwyer who would take home the first Hornet feature trophy of the year. Also, FYI the Flyer class will not be running at UIS this year.

Sunoco Race Fuels Hobby Stocks – Danny Sacquinte bypassed pole-sitter Scott Spilde to take the lead on the first lap of the Hobby Stock feature, but he would soon have his hands full with Adam Cline who was fighting for the lead when Spilde spun in corner two to bring out the first caution. Sacquinte and Cline were side-by-side following the re-start when another caution flew for a front stretch spin by Andy Stinson. Sacquinte regained the lead following the re-start when yet another caution flew for a three-car mishap in corner four. After the re-start, the two leaders would continue to battle it out until with three laps to go Kyle Anderson brought his Ford to the party and made it a three-way battle for the win. At the flag it was Anderson squeezing past Cline for second while Sacquinte held on for his first ever feature win.

Sim’s TV Outlaw Hobby Stocks – there were some new faces in the field of Outlaw Hobby Stocks, but up-front in the early running of the Outlaw Hobby feature, it was the familiar sight of Dillon Anderson showing the way. One of the new faces, Chris Hovden who graduated up from his title of 2007 Hobby Stock point champ, settled into his new class quickly as he shot to second. A yellow then flew when Steve Bartlett spun on the backstretch. With Anderson’s lead growing, a four-way battle for second brewed between Hovden, Austin Curtin, Pete Solum and Kyle Falck. With the checkers flying it was Hovden squeezing past Curtin for the runner-up spot but the win was an easy one for Anderson who collected his second trophy of the weekend, having also won the feature Friday night in Cresco.

Bill’s Auto Repair B-Mods – Jimmy Broszeit and Eric Verthein were battling for the lead early in the B-Mod feature when Broszeit spun in corner two to bring out the first caution. Verthein brought the field to the re-start flag but last year’s point champ Matt Jones rocketed his #23 by on the outside before they hit corner one to grab the front spot. Jones was building a sizeable lead when a nasty crash took place on the backstretch between veteran dirt trackers (but B-Mod rookies) Bryan Webb and Jeff Krambeer. The race was red flagged to get both drivers and their cars removed from the track. When racing resumed it was all Jones who made it look easy as he picked up right where he left off last year, finishing ahead of Verthein and Shane Panos. Like Anderson, this was Jones’ second feature win of the weekend following up a win at Cresco.

Decorah Implement Stock Cars – Matt Greiner, who made the long haul from Washington, Iowa, was strong in the early running of the Stock Car feature, grabbing the lead from pole sitter Don Rude. Last year’s point champ Dan Jones passed Rude for second and stuck his new blue and white #25 to the bottom and made it work as he grabbed the lead from Greiner. Jones moved back to the high side just before Danny Cole, Jr. spun in corner two to bring out a caution. Kevin Donlon moved to second on the re-start with Kurt Krauskopf working his way into the mix, as well. Another caution flew when Brent Tweten spun in corner four. This gave Krauskopf the preferred high line on Donlon on the re-start, and he used it to his full advantage, shooting to second and quickly was all over Jones for the lead. The two would run nose to tail throughout the remainder of the event with Krauskopf waiting for a mistake that Jones refused to make as the three time UIS Stock Car point champ got his 2008 season started in grand fashion yet again with another trophy to add to the collection.
